Mr-Glass Window Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If you have a Mr-Glass window in San Antonio with a failed part, we stock common Mr-Glass-compatible hardware and replacement components, and we install them for $180 – $520 per window depending on what failed and which Mr-Glass series you own. Most San Antonio homeowners discover the problem the same way: a window that won’t stay open, a crank that spins without engaging, or a sash that suddenly lets a hot draft through in July. You don’t need to rip out the whole window. In most cases, the failed part can be matched and replaced in about an hour on site.
Hale Windows San Antonio is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Mr-Glass, but we install and service Mr-Glass windows alongside seven other professional lines: PGT, CGI, CWS, ES Windows, ECO Window Systems, Therma-Tru, and ViewLux. If a Mr-Glass window is what you have, that’s what we work on.
Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To
Mr-Glass aluminum and vinyl windows share a lot of internal hardware across their series, but not everything swaps cleanly. The two things that matter most are the glass thickness and the balance system. Older Mr-Glass single-hungs from the 1990s and early 2000s commonly use a spiral balance with a pivot shoe at the bottom corners. Newer Mr-Glass vinyl replacement windows tend to use block-and-tackle balances or constant-force coils. If you try to put a block-and-tackle balance into a frame cut for a spiral balance, the sash sits crooked and binds within a week.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see often in San Antonio: two Mr-Glass windows side by side on the same house can have different balance hardware if one was replaced during a past remodel. Before we order or pull anything from the truck, we check the stamp on the existing hardware and measure the exact sash weight and channel width. For aftermarket replacements, we prefer the OEM-spec parts when they’re available because the spring tension is calibrated to the original sash weight. Quality aftermarket equivalents work fine on most single- and double-hungs, but we’ll tell you when OEM is the safer call. On casement and awning Mr-Glass windows, the crank mechanism and hinge arms are where compatibility gets tightest – those are usually series-specific, and we’d rather match by the number stamped on the operator arm than guess.
Look for the manufacturer label on the inside of the frame, usually on the top or side jamb. It will list the series name and sometimes the exact glass specs. If the label is faded or painted over, a clear photo of the corner hardware and the glass thickness measured with a caliper gets us most of the way there.
Signs Your Mr-Glass Window Installation Is Failing
- The sash drops when you raise it. This is almost always a failed balance. In San Antonio, the repeated expansion and contraction from triple-digit heat cycles weakens the spring tension faster than you’d expect. A window that slams shut is a hazard, especially for kids’ fingers. We replace the balances before it gets to that point.
- The window is hard to open, or it catches halfway. Dirt and grit work their way into the side channels over time. San Antonio’s dry winds push fine dust into the tracks, and once that mixes with old lubricant it turns into a paste. Sometimes a cleaning and re-lube fixes it. Sometimes the pivot shoes are cracked and the sash is dragging against the frame.
- You can feel air moving around the closed window. A failed or flattened weatherstripping seal is the usual culprit. In a San Antonio July, a window that leaks air is money leaving the house every day through the AC bill. We check the seal, the sash-to-frame alignment, and the glass glazing when we diagnose this.
- The crank turns but the window doesn’t move, or the handle spins freely. On Mr-Glass casement and awning windows, this points to a stripped operator gear or a broken hinge arm. The operator is a replaceable part. The hinge arm matters more because it carries the full weight of the sash every time the window opens.
- Condensation between the panes. That fog means the insulated glass seal has failed. No repair fixes a failed seal; the glass unit needs to be replaced. We measure the exact glass dimensions and order a replacement unit, in most cases without having to touch the surrounding frame.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For San Antonio Mr-Glass windows, here’s what you can expect to pay installed:
- Balance replacement (single- or double-hung): $180 – $280 per window, parts and labor included.
- Crank operator replacement (casement/awning): $160 – $240 per window.
- Hinge arm replacement (casement/awning): $220 – $320 per window.
- Weatherstripping and seal replacement: $95 – $180 per window.
- Insulated glass unit replacement: $320 – $520 per window, depending on glass size and low-E coating.
The range comes mostly from the specific Mr-Glass series, the glass size, and whether the window is on a ground floor or an upper floor with trickier ladder access. Every quote we give in San Antonio is a written price before any work starts. You’ll see the part cost and the labor cost separated. And every repair comes with a written guarantee. If the fix fails, the second visit is free. That’s not a courtesy; that’s the way we work. Spencer Odell started Hale Windows with the insistence that a window company should stand behind a part replacement the same way a mechanic stands behind a brake job.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely check yourself. A window that’s stuck can sometimes be fixed by cleaning the tracks with a dry cloth and a small brush, then applying a silicone-based lubricant (never WD-40; it gums up over time). If the weatherstripping is visibly flattened, you can peel it off and check the channel underneath. If you can see frost or fog between the glass panes, skip the diagnosis; that’s a sealed-unit failure and no home fix will restore it. What we don’t recommend: pulling the sash out to replace balances yourself. The balance springs on many Mr-Glass windows are under tension, and a released spring can take a chunk out of a hand. Window balance work is the kind of job where the tool slips and the hospital trip costs more than the service call. If the window is heavy, stuck, or you hear anything clanking inside the frame, call us at (361) 348-8929 before forcing anything. A window that leaks air in July is costing you money every single day – let’s just fix it.
FAQs
In San Antonio’s heat and UV, most Mr-Glass balances and seals last 8 – 15 years before they weaken; glass units with a failed seal can fog as early as year six or seven if the window faces direct west sun. We see more weight on the west-facing windows because they take the hottest part of the afternoon. If your home is over 10 years old and the windows are original, expect to replace weatherstripping at minimum, and probably balances on windows you use daily. That’s an honest reality, not a sales pitch. Call (361) 348-8929 and we’ll tell you what’s actually necessary.
Sometimes, yes. A dirty or misaligned track can be cleaned and realigned. A sticky crank can often be lubed instead of replaced. But a failed balance spring, a stripped gear, a cracked pivot shoe, or a broken hinge arm needs new parts. Repairing a worn component just delays the replacement by a few months and leaves you with the same problem in the middle of the next heat wave.
For most common Mr-Glass parts, the swap takes 45 minutes to 2 hours per window once we’re on site. If we need to order a specific glass unit or a series-specific operator, expect a few days for the part to arrive. We’ll give you the straight timeline when we quote, and we don’t start a job without the right parts in hand. No surprises, written price first.
We stock common balance sizes, pivot shoes, weatherstripping profiles, and crank operators for the Mr-Glass series we see most in San Antonio. Specialty glass units and unusual hinge arms are ordered per job. The best way to know if we have it on the truck is to call (361) 348-8929 and describe what’s wrong, or text a photo of the window and the failed part. A live person answers; that’s how we run the shop.
