CWS Window Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

If you have a CWS window that’s failed or failing, we stock the parts and install CWS-compatible window hardware, seals, balances, and glass packages across San Antonio, with most jobs done in one visit. A typical CWS window installation or component replacement runs between $175 and $850 installed depending on what’s gone wrong, and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: a window that suddenly won’t stay up, a draft that wasn’t there last winter, or condensation that won’t wipe away because it’s trapped inside the glass. Spencer Odell and our crew have pulled failed CWS components out of houses from Alamo Heights to Stone Oak, and the pattern is consistent: it’s rarely the whole window, usually one specific part doing all the failing.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS (Custom Window Systems) builds several residential lines, and the parts that fail are rarely interchangeable between them. What matters when matching a CWS window installation part is the series label on the frame or sash, not just the brand name. You’ll find a small white or silver sticker on the inside edge of the sash or frame corner with the CWS series code and often a manufacturing date. We work most often on the CWS 4000, 6000, and 8000 series aluminum and vinyl single-hung, horizontal slider, and casement windows, plus the CWS impact-rated lines common in newer San Antonio builds east of downtown where wind-load codes kicked in after 2015. The gotcha: CWS 4000-series balances are 9/16-inch channel width, while the 6000-series uses 3/4-inch block-and-tackle carriages. If you buy the wrong width off a parts site, it won’t seat. That’s the kind of mistake we catch on the first measurement. For CWS specifically, OEM parts are worth the premium on balances and locking hardware because the aftermarket equivalents sold online often lack the reinforced pawls CWS uses on the 8000 series. For sashes, glass units, and exterior weatherstripping, quality aftermarket parts from brands like Mr-Glass perform just as well and keep the price down. We carry both and we’ll tell you which makes sense for your window. We are an independent service provider and not affiliated with CWS; we work across CWS and the other lines we service, including PGT, CGI, and ES Windows.

Signs Your CWS Window Installation Is Failing

  • The window won’t stay open. On a single-hung CWS, this usually means the balance tube or block-and-tackle system has worn out. The metal coil inside the balance was never designed for 15-plus years of San Antonio heat cycling, and once it loses tension the sash feels twice as heavy as it should.
  • You feel a draft when the window is closed. On CWS casements and sliders, the felt or vinyl pile weatherstripping compresses over time. In Texas, it also bakes dry. Once it’s flattened, you get air infiltration along the meeting rails, and your air conditioner works harder in July.
  • Condensation between the glass panes. That’s a failed insulated glass unit, or IGU, which means the edge seal on the double-pane assembly has failed and moisture is inside. You cannot wipe it off. The fix is a new IGU; we match the Low-E coating and gas fill to the original CWS spec.
  • The lock takes force to engage or doesn’t catch. CWS locks on 8000-series units have a die-cast keeper that strips over time, especially if the sash is even slightly out of square from settling. This is a common one in older San Antonio homes where clay soil shifts the framing seasonally.
  • The sash rides rough or binds halfway. That’s usually a worn sash shoe, a cracked channel guide, or built-up grime inside the jamb track. On CWS sliders, check the roller assemblies; if you hear a grinding sound when you slide it, the rollers are shot and the metal bearing has started to eat the track.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

CWS window installation parts and labor in San Antonio run from $175 to $850 per window depending on the component. Here’s what we typically see:

  • Balance replacement (single-hung): $175 to $280 installed, including both side balances and testing.
  • Weatherstripping replacement: $110 to $220 installed, depending on window type and how much of the perimeter is worn.
  • Lock and keeper replacement: $90 to $180 installed with CWS OEM hardware.
  • Sash shoe or channel guide repair: $120 to $230 installed, including track cleanup.
  • Insulated glass unit replacement (IGU): $320 to $850 installed, depending on glass size, Low-E coating, gas fill, and whether it’s a single pane or a full unit.

Every price is written before work starts, so there’s no surprise on the invoice. The workmanship is covered by our written guarantee, and if the part fails again, the second visit is free. You also get our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right. No argument needed.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: clean the tracks with a dry brush, look for a CWS label, and photograph the failed hardware before you call, so we can confirm the right series ahead of time. But when it comes to replacing balances, sash shoes, or glass units, the springs and counterweights inside a CWS window hold tension that can take a finger off if the wrong component is released. It’s not worth it. We’ve walked into San Antonio homes where a homeowner tried a balance swap from a YouTube video and the sash came down on their hand. If your CWS window is binding, sagging, or drafty, call us at (361) 348-8929 and we’ll quote you a written price.
